A field experiment was carried out at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi during Kharif 1969 and 1970 to study the effect of herbicidal and sub-herbicidal rates of simazine on maize crop. The herbicidal rates i.e. 1/2, 1.0 and 2.0 kg/ha of simazine effectively controlled the grassy and non-grassy weeds. Maize yield and its attributes were significantly improved by the application of 1/2 kg simazine/ha while 1 and 2 kg rates did not show any additional improvement, particularly in grain yield. Nitrogen uptake and protein content were enhanced even due to sub-herbicidal application of simazine i.e. 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4 kg/ha. Herbicidal application (1/2, 1.0 and 2.0 kg/ha) of simazine also reported improvement in the maize protein. Nitrogen fertilization at 80 and 120 kg/ha marked favourable effect on grain and stover yields, nitrogen uptake and protein content.
