Abstract

The goal of ICS is improved income and well-being of farmers, through improved information flow leading to increased farmers ’use of agricultural technologies. It was observed that farmers tend to use excessive dose of fertilizers and also indiscriminate use of pesticides to get hefty production from small holdings. These practices are undoubtedly unsustainable. These problems have been well recognized since last two decades due to weak agricultural information communication systems. There has hardly been any improvement in the situations. This study was conducted with 80 respondents in Rabi 2007 to know the technological adoption gaps in the locale, where study revealed that 95% respondents were literate and majority (52.50%) of middle aged and 75% engaged in farming, 52.50% having marginal size of holding and 67.5% farmers irrigated their crops by tube well & canal. In case of potato crop, use of micronutrients, seed treatment, seed rate, plant protection measures and post harvest management was not yet improved. Micronutrients were not practiced by 90 per cent and seed treatment by 86.25 per cent of farmers. Seed rate was used either higher or lower in case of all the respondents and thus, accepted as 98.75 per cent partial gap by the farmers. Manuring was not practiced by 75 per cent of farmers. 85, 81.50 per cent partial gap was measured in the use of fertilizers and post harvest practices respectively. The practices such as water management, harvesting, sowing time registered with 90, 82.50 and 76.25 per cent no gap means they were found very near to scientific recommendations.
