Opinions and suggestions of the respondents towards farm magazine: A study of Kisan Bharti published by GBPUA&T, Pantnagar

Abstract

Agriculture in India has been the backbone of the national economy since ages. Agriculture contributes about 18.5 per cent of the national GDP and sustains livelihood of about 65–70 per cent of the population. Modem mass media have not been able to create the necessary motivation, enthusiasm and consciousness among the farmers. Therefore, there are many farm periodicals and farm magazines published by the ICAR institutes, State Agricultural Universities, Non-Governmental Organization etc. to cater the needs pf farmers. As a part of the efforts to reach the farmers as well as rural community G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology publishes a Hindi monthly farm magazine ‘Kisan Bharti ’since 1969. To analyze the effectiveness of this farm magazine ‘Kisan Bharti ’in farmers ’perception, this study was conducted. The study was conducted by selecting 12 issues of Kisan Bharti, published in 2006 and further, seven articles from those issues according to the need and priority of the respondents. Fifty respondents were selected from Shatsang Asharam which is located in the Shantipuri-II, Dist. U.S. Nagar, Uttarakhand. The effectiveness of farm magazine was studied by using Farm Magazine Effectiveness Index (FMEI) developed by Nataraju (1991). the effectiveness of the farm magazine, cover page contents was satisfactory, content components were near about satisfactory and format components also were found satisfactory but illustration components were found to be less satisfactory by the respondents.
