The awareness of farmers regarding the latest technologies and adoption can mainly be attributed to effective communication by extension personnel. In order to study the existing levels of awareness and adoption by farmers, the recommended sugar cane growing technologies were selected. The data were collected from 128 sugarcane growers selected at random from 12 villages in Birbhum district of West Bengal state mainly around the campus of Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan in the year 2008-'09. The respondents were selected through multistage sampling technique. The empirical evidence suggests that the awareness of the recommended sugar cane growing technologies among the respondents was very low and consequently the adoption of the same was very poor. Generally, those who were aware of the recommendations, adopted the same, which may imply that lack of awareness on the part of the respondents was the major reason for non-adoption of recommendations. This, in turn, can be attributed to ineffective communication by extension personnel.
