It is very common nowadays to speak of an ‘'information society ’ ’in which control of information or information based knowledge has replaced control over matter as an ultimate source of economic power. As far as the importance of the Internet is concerned, it is a substantive element to the 21st century life in the field of education. Students need to form judgment about what they read, hear and see on internet, in the same way as we have to judge the quality of information received from radio, newspaper and television. So, everyone needs to develop skills in selection and evaluation of Internet-based information. Technology has been developed dramatically, worldwide and affects all walks of life, especially with respect to the Internet and telecommunications.
The present study conducted on the students of Banaras Hindu University to find out the internet utilization pattern among the students, to study the perceived uses of internet for students and to study the motivation for using internet by students reveals that students are computer and internet friendly as cent percent students use internet, a majority of the students used internet for information and academic purpose while students are motivated for using the internet because one is able to access and practice Internet.
