Abstract

The culture and civilization of ancient India were based on and centered round agriculture. The effectiveness was still sharper when communicated through the distilled intelligent sentences which in Indian context known as "Proverbs". The Study on Climate Change Communication was undertaken with the objective of documenting the proverbs and finding the validity scores for these proverbs in present day context. The study documented 23 proverbs (11 predicting rainfall and 12 predicting drought) and 21 belief systems (18 predicting rainfall and 03 predicting drought) prevalent in western parts of Uttar Pradesh. The results of the study indicate that, the farmers were using proverbs in their day to day agricultural practices. Farmers used certain bio-indicators like plants, insects, birds etc for predicting the time of occurrence and distribution pattern of rainfall and drought condition. Validation score of proverbs and belief systems on prediction of rain and drought received highest validation score (81) and lowest validation score (23) was found by belief system. The study revealed that all the proverbs and belief system has validation score between 23 to 81.
