Abstract

The present paper aims to examine the effectiveness of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM)a programme of Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Government of India (GoI) towards creating sustainable livelihood for the rural poor. The results of primary data collected from the randomly selected 96 women members of self-help groups (SHGs) formed under the NRLM programme in the villages of Chhanbey block of Mirzapurdistrict, U.P., India, indicate that a positive and acceptable change is found in respecttoavailability and sustainability of livelihood of women households. This has further led to improvement in socio-economic status of women not confined to households only but in the society at large too.
