Lasers are being used in the field of dentistry mainly, in periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Laser therapy has certain advantages as compared to conventional techniques such as precision in tissue destruction, minimal damage of surrounding tissues, haemostatic effect by sealing vessels of less than 1mm internal diameter, prevention of tumor seeding, reduction of post-operative pain and edema, sterilization of wound and microscopic & endoscopic control. Along with these advantages, the health hazards and the cost-factor of the lasers are the limiting factors in their use. This article aims to review the rationale and the use of lasers in periodontics.
