Study of Blood Sugar Profile and Lipid Profile in Cases of Cirrhosis of Liver

To study blood sugar and lipid profile in cases of cirrhosis of liver and its correlation with different etiologies of cirrhosis of liver.

60 cases of cirrhosis were selected from the medicine OPD and gastroenterology OPD and the medicine indoor wards. All the patients with liver cirrhosis were included in the study irrespective of etiology. Patients with diabetes and cirrhosis and taking treatment for diabetes were excluded from the study.

Out of 60 cirrhotic patients 85% had anorexia, followed by melena and splenomegaly in 60% cases each. Prevalence of diabetes mellitus in patients of hepatitis C related cirrhosis (33.33%) was significantly higher than the patients of cirrhosis (4.16%) due to other causes. Prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia (>200 mg/dl) in patients of alcoholic cirrhosis (62.5%) was significantly higher as compared to cirrhosis (8.33%) due to other causes. LDL value of <100 mg/dl was observed in 73.33% of the all cirrhosis patients in our study. HDL values between 40–60 mg/dl were observed in 40% of the all cirrhosis patients.

We conclude that blood sugar & lipid profile estimation should be done in all cirrhotic patients as early as possible, irrespective of etiology, so that better management is possible for these patients.
