Administration of a-keto-analogues of essential amino acids reduce the accumulation of toxic metabolites in the patients of chronic kidney disease. Our objective was to evaluate the influence of dietary supplementation with keto-analogues of essential amino acids (EAA) on quality of life and progression of chronic kidney disease.
Established cases of both diabetic and non-diabetic chronic kidney disease were evaluated clinically and biochemically at base line and 24 weeks after starting therapy with tablets specific amino acids in the given quantity. Changes in GFR and renal and nutritional parameters were measured.
Twenty-six patients (15 M, 11 F) with chronic kidney disease on conventional low-protein diet (0.6g/kg/day) were designated very low protein diet of 0.3gm/Kg/day supplemented with a-keto analogues of essential amino acids. Ten patients served as control.. Changes in serum albumin and mean endogenous creatinine clearance in the study group were statistically significant as compared to control group.
Conservative therapy is the only option available for majority of Indians with chronic kidney disease. Addition of a-keto analogues of essential amino acids improve quality of life and prove helpful in retarding the progression of disease but cost may still be a limiting factor.
