Fire Cracker ocular trauma during Diwali

Abstract

This is a retrospective, hospital based, single centre study in which records of 40 patients with fire cracker induced ocular trauma during Diwali week (3rd Nov 2010 to 9th Nov 2010) was analysed. This study was performed to highlight the nature of fire cracker related ocular trauma and visual outcome in these patients.

40 cases with fire cracker ocular trauma during Diwali week were included in our study. For all patient we had taken the history, performed detailed ocular and systemic examination. Patients having previous ocular morbidity were excluded.

The injuries reported ranged from conjunctival or corneal burns to globe rupture with interventions ranging from ocular wash to repair of globe perforation. Initial Best Corrected visual Acuity was (PL HM) in 5 cases; (CF 5/60) in 2 cases; (6/60 to 6/12) in 20 cases & (6/9- 6/6) in 11 cases; not able to assess the vision in 5 cases (uncooperative patients due to age less than 5 years). At 3 month follow up Best Corrected visual Acuity was (PL HM) in 4 cases; (CF 5/60) in 6 cases; (6/60 to 6/12) in 16 cases & (6/9- 6/6) in 17 cases.

Fire cracker related ocular trauma included Corneal abrasions, Superficial foreign bodies, Lacerations of lid and conjunctiva, Hyphema, Vitreous haemorrhage & open globe injuries. Patients having posterior segment involvement had poor visual prognosis. Other main causes of poor vision were corneal scar & irregular astigmatism due to tear repair. Timely intervention resulted in a better visual outcome.
