Abstract

To study the effect of tranexamic acid on blood loss during and after Cesarean Section and to explore the safety of tranexamic acid use in pregnant females.

100 primigravidas in age group of 20–40 years who underwent Cesarean Section were divided into two groups. In study group, 50 women received tranexamic acid (1g/10ml diluted with 20ml of 5% glucose which was given 10 minutes before incision as slow infusion over 5 minutes). In control group, 50 women were not given tranexamic acid. Amount of blood loss, changes in hemoglobin, pulse, blood pressure, Apgar Score and side effects were noted and analyzed. Tools of statistical analysis used were paired ‘t’ test and Mean ± SD.

The mean blood loss in study group after giving tranexamic acid was 166.50 ± 24.72 which was significantly lower than control group (378.48 ± 23.75; p <.001). 10 women in study group & 2 women in control group complained of nausea and vomiting.

Tranexamic acid when given preoperatively significantly reduces blood loss during cesarean section. It was found to be safe for mother as well as for the baby.
