Biochemical evaluation of micro-greens and seeds of Punjab celery 1 (Apium graveolens L.)

Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate different biochemicals in micro-greens and seeds of Punjab Celery 1. Biochemical parameters viz. total carbohydrates, total soluble sugars, reducing-nonreducing sugars, starch, crude fiber, ash, minerals, antioxidants, crude and total soluble proteins were analyzed. Additionally, in micro-greens; pigment composition, and in seeds; protein profiling, the essential and fixed oil compositions were also assessed. Micro-greens dominated in phenols and tannins and also depicted high levels of minerals whereas, the seeds were found rich in carbohydrate, protein, minerals, and tocopherol. Celery seeds had 2% essential oil, with limonene and senkyunolide as major components; and 23% fixed oil rich in petroselenic acid. The seed proteins were fractionated into albumin, globulin, prolamins, and glutelins. In conclusion, celery 1 micro-greens that abound in minerals and antioxidants suggest their promising nutraceutical potential for humans and the seed oil may be exploited in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry.
