During ancient period the modern emancipating ideologies related with Dalits were not prevalent People belonging to higher castes known as savarnas exploit those with lower castes. Extreme castism, exploitation, atrocities and caste based injustice were main features of those days. Under such circumstances a story written Munshi Prem Chandra ‘Sadgati’ was a milestone in which the traditions customs and misinterpretations of religion were very efficiently explained. He has successfully analyzed the extent up to which a brahmine can exploit the harijan. An attempt has been made in the present paper to understand the caste based discrimination and cultural and religious misconceptions prevailing in the ancient periods through the story and film ‘sadgati’ written by Munshi Prame Chandra and produced by Satyajeet Rai.
