In 1990s, a new body of work, known as queer theory emerged which represents the departure from traditional norms of heterosexuality. Its area of interest is lesbian and gay studies. Queer sensibility evolved in the western patriarchal cultures, analyses heterosexist and homophobic character of an individual i.e their behavior, attitude towards others, expressions, and likes and dislikes. A term "queer" is understood to mean "strange," "odd," "unusual," "abnormal," or "sick", and is routinely applied to lesbians and gay men as a term of abuse. This paper jocuses particularly on the play Cloud 9 by a well known playwright Caryl Churchill. The paper addresses the issues of gender role in the patriarchal society, oppression faced by the female and male by the perjormative gender role, and their desirejor a queerworld.
