The Buddhism, first of the many, aiming primarily to remove the ills of Brahmanical Hinduism, influenced the society to a great extent through its tenets. Detachment from material comfort, ahimsa and Noble Eight Fold Path inculcated a high sense of ethics and morality both in public as well as private life. These all were not merely to attain Nirvana but to strictly guide the people's conduct. The present paper analyzing the above facts also attempts to examine the idea of universal brotherhood and integration that Indian society experienced under the umbrella of Buddhism.
