Education is a key indicator to denote social and economical status of an individual in the society. The status of education in villages of India is very poor. It is obvious that more than seventy percent of the Indian population lives in rural areas where education is either in very poor position or it lies only up to middle level. However, higher education in the rural areas is below than ten percent. The dropout rates in rural areas are very high as we aware that most of the students have not completed their continuous education or higher education. Generally, what happened children's are use to enroll themselves in primary education but they generally fail to carry on and the result is they just drop their education either due to poor economic condition or some other socio-cultural factors. So the present paper deals with the role of education in the development of rural areas particularly in the respect of villagers self development, participation in various Government and private organization, awareness towards Government welfare programmes etc.
