Food is essential for the survival of human being and to ensure this survival with their evolution human being has discovered the variety of foods. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian both categories of foods have been in vogue for centuries. But these days there seems to be a controversy on the issue of non-vegetarian food habits in our country. The perception that in ancient India non-vegetarian food was not prevalent is gaining ground. There are also attempts to demean the no-vegetarian food habits. And that is why it is needed to be examined whether non-veg. food habits were prevalent in ancient India or not. This paper attempts to trace the food habits in ancient India and also tries to collect the evidence which breaks the widely perceived notion that Muslims introduced non-veg food in the country.
