The condition of women in the society as a social issue often finds the place in the literature. In the Indian context, for a very long time writings is done which revolve around the central character of a woman. In this paper two eminent literature works have been discussed; the first one is "Mahua Charit" written by Kashinath Singh and another one is "Tyagpatra", a novel written by Jainendra. The two works have the time difference of 74 years and so are the characters. The protagonist of "Mahua Charit", Mahua is much different from Mrinal of "Tyagpatra". But one question remains pertinent in both the works, i.e. whether marriage is an institution which is just an expansion of the patriarchal society for a woman. An institution where always women have to sacrifice and equality seems to be superficial. This article discusses two different ecological setups and tries to decipher the reasons behind the continuance of patriarchy in marriage institution with the help of the behavioural pattern of the characters.
