Abstract

2017 is the centenary year of Muktibodh's birth and it is the right time to revisit the "poet of poets" and his ideas. The writings of Muktibodh transcend the time period and they are equally pertinent today as they used to be when written. Muktibodh has expressed his dissatisfaction with his poems and his poetry let us face those uncomfortable questions which society generally prefers to ignore. He questioned the capitalist model of economy and expressed his concern of inequality and injustice in his poems. For him, capitalism brings with it certain evils and can't ensure a just and equitable order in society. His ideological leaning, which is expressed in his poems, is somewhere between Gandhian and Marxist ideology. This paper is an attempt to understand various facets of Muktibodh's poems and their pertinence in present time and understand Muktibodh and his poetry in a better way after revisiting his works.
