Dalit politics in India has a long history which has its roots embedded in the caste-based system of exploitation and it evolved as a counter-reaction to this centuries’ old oppression. The discourse of Dalit politics claims to establish a social order which will be free from caste-based discrimination and be just in nature. This paper studies the evolution of Dalit politics and tries to understand the ideological premises on which the whole discourse relies. The Bhakti movement which was enriched by the thoughts of Kabir, Raidas etc. was nothing but a reaction against the established Brahminical order of society. However, the success of Bhakti movement could not be materialised in a way which could be beneficial for the betterment of the living condition of the downtrodden classes of our country. It was very late and specifically after Dr. Ambedkar that the situation began to change in reality. But there is not all hunky dory for the Dalit politics. It is facing various challenges which threaten the overall existence and pertinence of the discourse of Dalit politics. The paper studies these aspects and analyses the challenges to the narrative of Dalit politics.
