In Indian society, women have always been given a higher place and ancient texts too told to treat them with respect. But with the advancement of human civilization and advent of new technologies and modernization, the role and social status of women has been changing. They are now performing an almost new set of tasks and duties which is in no form identical to their previous passive roles. Active participation of women in economic activities has increased their social status and brought them respect. But with the new roles, new challenges do come and same is happening in the case of working ladies. They have to perform dual responsibilities; one at the workplace and another at home. This complicates their situation and often leads to conflict between both the roles they perform. It has been found in many sociological studies that in most of the cases a woman has to quit her job when there is a conflict between family responsibilities and professional ones. This paper is a sociological study of the changing social status and role of women in the workplace and how they coordinate between their often conflicting dual roles.
