The contribution of women in the work field often goes unaccounted and they don't receive just compensation for their hard work they do in different fields of work. With the advent of the feminist methodology of research it has been stressed upon that the contribution of women should be studied in different economic activities and their contribution should be acknowledged in an equal manner as that of any male worker. Varanasi's silk industry is one such sector where the contributions of women have been ignored and unrecognized. This happens sometimes because of the multiplicity of roles a woman has to perform. Where a male worker is confined to the core economic activities, women have to perform daily home chores simultaneously with contributing to the economic activity. This paper is the study centred on the women engaged in the handloom weaving and allied activities of the silk industry of Banaras and explores how the women are coordinating between family and work when modernized trade poses new challenges to their generations-old livelihood.
