Abstract

A 4 years aged Murrah buffalo on its first parity has been presented with the complaint of dystocia. The animal was bred by natural service and completed the full gestation period. She was in the second stage of parturition for the last seven hours but could not deliver the fetus. The vagina and external cervix were already prolapsed making the situation even more complicated. Haemorrhage was occurring from two lacerated site of the cervix. The ascitic fetus was successfully removed by forced traction after peritoneal fluid drainage of the fetus with siphon method. The innovative attempt by siphoning of the ascitic fluid with the help of a rubber tube and pre and post operative management of the dam has been discussed in the present paper. The ascitic fetus had approximately 25 litres of fluid in the peritoneal cavity and bilateral polycystic kidneys. The buffalo was completely normal and no prolapse of the genital tract was reported up to one week after the treatment.
